Gaining an Edge in a Recession

BY SCOTT SORWEID
RightFootResume

There are a few things you can do today to get the edge when it comes to your employment.

A recent article written in Fortune Magazine has concluded that for every 1 job opening there are 100 people who apply.

However, I am not writing this to deliver the dreadful news on the economy; I'll save that for the major television networks. With the right attitude followed by the correct actions you will be well on your way to improving
your job situation.

First of all, be positive.

Thinking about your daily tasks in a positive light will give you more energy and drive to see them through. Try to think about all the positive aspects of your life and what you have accomplished. I bet you will be amazed at what you’ve done. Don’t think about all the hurdles ahead of you - that will only slow you down. Personally, I like to start my day off with positive affirmations and meditation; this puts me in the right state of mind to tackle the tasks at hand.

If you are currently employed, there are a few important actions you may want to be taking today to ensure your job security. Start off by taking a look at your work history with your employer; make a list of some of the most important things you have achieved and projects you have made a positive impact on. This list will come in handy if you ever have to defend your job relevancy.

Keeping track of these things, including ways you saved your company money, programs you have implemented and deals you have closed, will be useful when the time comes to vie for that sought after promotion or begin the quest for a new job.

Research future high demand jobs

If you are in the process of looking for a new career, consider researching jobs that will be in high demand in the future. For example, the population is ever-growing and the demand for health care grows with it.

Also, as the population in San Diego ages there will be more and more need for personal, private health care. It's estimated that in San Diego 11.1 percent of the population are 65 or older and that number is expected to rise quickly.

Another industry that is solid in tough economic times is the military. It is not for everyone, but with the military having such a huge presence here it may be something to consider. There are also many perks to help sweeten the deal; money for college tuition, signing bonuses, housing compensation and medical care.

It looks like “green jobs” may be in for some colossal growth as well. San Diego is poised to become one of the leaders in this industry. With Obama stressing new environmental energy in America’s future, there are sure to be many new openings to fill.

Submit a "lights out" resume

Now that you have a few jumping off points for your career research, make sure that when you go for that job, you are at the head of the class with a

professional resume

.

Submitting a "lights out" resume will ensure that you will be on the very top of the pile.

Chargers fans, you know what I'm talking about. Recruiters, on average, spend just 10 to 30 seconds looking at each resume they receive. Of course, recruiters are looking at more resumes than ever before.

To stand out against other applicants you must have a well-written resume that showcases your skills and achievements. A well-designed resume is equally as important. Just a little color and personality goes a long way. A small investment such as having your resume professionally written and designed will make a big impact on your callbacks.

Networking is another important avenue to develop.

The more people you meet, the more opportunities you will have to put your name out there. A lot of people stress the need for networking but many don't know how to accomplish this. It's not difficult and doesn't have to become a chore. San Diego has many networking groups available and most are free of charge.

It might seem impossible, but you really can find your dream job today and improve your current job situation. It might take a little more effort and time but with the right mindset and actions it can be done.

How You Can Get Your Resume Noticed - Today!
By Scott Sorweid

The job recruiter gets many, many resumes for every job opening (recent studies have shown for every one job opening 100 to 1000 resumes are sent). The competition is fierce.

That's the bad news - the good news is that, with a little extra effort, you can create a resume that makes you stand out as the best candidate for a job you are seeking. The first thing you want to do is avoid all the common resume pitfalls. Check the spelling. One word that is misspelled will KILL your chances right away.

Make sure your resume is not too general and that it is targeted to the particular job you are applying for. If you want to really stand out above everyone else - you MUST do these additional steps.

1. Make sure your resume is accomplishments-driven instead of duties-driven.

How have you helped your employers?

  • Make money
  • Save money
  • Save time
  • Make work easier
  • Solve a specific problem
  • Be more competitive
  • Build relationships
  • Expand the business
  • Attract new customers
  • Retain existing customers

These are the issues you must be able to get across in an effective and creative way.

2. Get rid of your Objective statement.

Here is another mistake that is commonly made. Every employer already knows that you want the job, that's why you sent your resume, right?

Sounds simple but almost everyone does this.

3. Have an outstanding resume design!

One of the most important factors in getting your resume noticed is a great design. Don't let your resume go unnoticed because you use a generic template. Having a professional resume writing service prepare your resume will put you way ahead of everyone else.

You must be able to show your personality with your resume.

At Right Foot Resume we take this concept one step further and create a "Personal Identity" for our clients.

I have showed you how you can get your resume noticed. It takes a little extra effort but it's a MUST if you want to stand out from the crowd.
